Silvia Moresco, a special-session graduate, is granted a 2,500 € scholarship for her thesis “Architectures for children’s care. A pediatric hospice in Reggio Calabria”

I wish to deeply thank the Grenfellove Foundation, mainly for the attention and the support they devote to young people along their education path, thus keeping Marco and Gloria’s memory alive.
During my studies I’ve been developing a strong interest in the social role of architecture, to be referred to its relationship with territories, environment and people’s quality of life. Such an interest drove my thesis to the design of a pediatric hospice in Reggio Calabria, by taking into account both the shortage of peculiar local structures and the necessity of reconsidering care sites as in dialogue with the urban and human context.
The project aimed at imagining a comfortable and safe place for children and their families, to be contemporarily able to establish a dialogue with town, landscape and community: a space devised not only as the solution to therapy needs but also as the tool for fostering young patients’ inclusion through their relations with- and proximity to the citizenry, thus contributing to create a mutual link between therapy site and town.
The awareness of the acknowledgement to my work by means of this award makes me proud. It’s really important for me and encourages me to go on. I will keep this experience with me in my professional future, as a tangible proof of the contribution architecture may provide for people and communities’ welfare.
